The Circus Guide to

Berlin Art Week

OUR BERLIN

Berlin Art Week 2024

Every year in September the eyes of the art world are on our hometown for the five days of Berlin Art Week. Between the 11th and 15th September, more than 100 locations in the city will present a diverse programme of exhibitions, performances, screenings and more. You’ll find Berlin Art Week not only in museums and galleries, but theatres and project spaces, pop-up venues and even in the open air.

It would be impossible to showcase everything that is taking place across the city, so we’ve picked some highlights of the Berlin Art Week in locations close to The Circus Hostel, Hotel and Apartments.

HAMBURGER BAHNHOF

Close to the main station, the Hamburger Bahnhof no longer welcomes trains but is instead Berlin’s leading contemporary art museum and well worth a visit at all times of the year. As well as their current exhibitions, during Berlin Art Week the Hamburger Bahnhof is the venue for a series of concerts, performances and conversations with an emphasis on sound art. Highlights include concerts with the artist Naama Tsabar on 12th and 14th September, linked to her exhibition Estuaries and featuring musicians and dancers.

KW INSTITUTE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART

A short walk from Rosenthaler Platz, in the heart of the gallery district that developed in the 1990s along Auguststraße, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art presents a performance by dancer and choreographer Sarah Aviaja Hammeken that has been commissioned for Berlin Art Week and is connected to the ongoing exhibition Arctic Hysteria. The exhibition is the first solo show for the artists Pia Arke to be shown outside Kalaait Nunaat (Greenland) and the Nordic countries, and brings together over 100 works that explore the narratives of Greenland, the ties to Denmark, and Inuit women.

KUNST RAUM MITTE

Also on Auguststraße, Kunst Raum Mitte presents DIFFRACTIONS 2024, a mix of installation and acoustic artworks that explore the history of the gallery venue itself and interact with the architecture of the space. A mix of performance, archival materials, architecture and political action, it promises to be atmospheric and intriguing.

EIGEN + ART LAB

Our neighbours on Torstraße, Eigen + Art Lab is the project space of Galerie Eigen + Art and has been the venue for exhibitions and artistic interactions since 2015. During Berlin Art Week the Lab is the venue for a solo exhibition from the German artist Eric Meier, who mixes photography with video works and installations to explore urban spaces and architectural fragments of post-socialist transformation.

BERLIN ART LINK

If you don’t happen to be in Berlin this September, never fear: we live in one of Europe’s artistic capitals and there is always something going on. An excellent resource for those interested in art both in Berlin and beyond is Berlin Art Link, a digital magazine focused on contemporary art and culture. There you’ll find publications of studio visits, exhibition reviews, artist profiles, interviews and more. They’ve also put together a hotel and restaurant guide for Berlin Art Week 2024… see if there is somewhere you might recognise!
