Feeling Frühling –

The Circus Springtime Guide

OUR BERLIN

Feeling Frühling – The Circus Springtime Guide

Springtime in Berlin is when the mood in the city lifts after a cold winter. As the flowers come into bloom and the trees blossom, we head for the parks or down to the riverbank. The cafes slowly but surely open up their outdoor spaces after the winter and, if the weather is particularly mild later in the season, the beer gardens flip open their hatches too. Beyond simply being outdoors, this is a fine time to explore all the weird and wonderful things Berlin has to offer. Which is where our spring guide comes in.

All the selections have been taken from our very own DIY Berlin Guide – which you can find in The Circus houses. Not only are they all well worth a visit in their own right, but some of them will bring you to parts of the city most visitors never get to experience.

These insider tips have been curated by The Circus Team and illustrated by the wonderfully talented Nina Hüpen-Bestendonk – make sure you check out Nina’s website and instagram  more of her work.

GÄRTEN DER WELT

Blooming marvellous. The Gardens of the World were the GDR’s answer to the West German Federal Horticultural Show in Britz in 1987, and out of this bit of Cold War rivalry Berlin got two wonderful parkland spaces. You’ll find the Gardens of the World in Marzahn, where Chinese, Japanese, Balinese, Korean and Italian gardens will take you on a global floral tour.

TULUS LOTREK

Springtime is for lovers. Or for treating yourself. Or a bit of both. With a well-deserved Michelin star, Tulus Lotrek is both modern and creative without being pretentious or over the top. It’s pricey for sure, but worth every cent. Owner Ilona adds to the exquisite experience, so book your seven-course dinner with wine pairing and forget the world in endless indulgence.

SCHWERBELASTUNGSKÖRPER

It’s a great time of year for a stroll, but it’s always good to have a destination. How about the ‘Heavy Loading Body’ of Schöneberg, a massive cylinder of concrete built in 1941 to study the feasibility of constructing large buildings on Berlin’s sandy grounds. After this architectural curiosity, head to the Südgelände Naturpark, where an old railway yard has been rewilded and left to nature.

IMPORTANT:

Seasonal opening Hours: April, 2nd until October, 30th
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 6 pm

Admission is free.

SPACEHALL

Time for tunes. If you love playing records – and buying them – then you’ll love the Spacehall. Located in the heart of Kreuzberg, it is the best record shop in the city. Trust me. Their selection is huge and covers all genres, so make sure you bring at least one empty record bag. It will be full by the time you leave.

THE SWAG

Got a spring in your step? The Swag are Berlin’s finest live hip-hop band, period. At the Badehaus you can check out their weekly Swag Jam, an amazing mix of original tunes, open-mic sessions and an aftershow party with DJs. Their musicianship is as impressive as their shows are fun.
