Pahar Trust – Renovating a School in Nepal

If you’ve been following what we do at The Circus for a while then you’ll know that we’ve long been involved in charities and other social projects, both here in our home city of Berlin and further away. Often, these are projects that came to us via our guests, members of our team or other friends of The Circus who have a personal connection to them.

You can get an overview of these projects on our website, but today we wanted to talk about a recent fundraising campaign that saw us working with the Pahar Trust Nepal to complete the renovation and installation of an Early Childhood Development classroom at the Shree Prabhabkari Basic School in Gairathok, Parbat, Nepal. We were aiming to raise around €4800 to fund repainting and repairs, installing a suspended ceiling to improve insulation, a new cushioned carpet, new furniture and learning resources.

The Pahar Trust Nepal is a UK-based charity that works very closely with local communities in Nepal to make sure all the money raised benefits the wider community. The village of Gairathok has a population of about 400, with around 40 young people at the local school. The fundraising for their Early Childhood Development classroom was part of a wider Pahar Trust Nepal campaign to mark their 30th anniversary, to build and renovate such classrooms across communities in the Himalayan foothills where most of their projects are located.

Here’s what the Pahar Trust Nepal themselves say about the importance of this work:

When children attend pre-primary education, they are more likely to stay in school and attain minimum reading and mathematics competencies. It also supports economic growth, as it enables mothers and other caregivers the opportunity to work and increase their earnings.

Research also shows that children who receive safe, quality education at this age are significantly more likely to have more successful outcomes as adults.

The campaign supports the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal to ensure all children have access to quality early childhood development (ECD) so that they are ready for primary education.

We’re extremely pleased to announce that The Circus team and our guests have raised €4890 for the school in Gairathok, and that work is already underway to renovate and refurbish the Early Years Development classroom. As soon as it is completed, and our friends in Nepal have sent some pictures over, we’ll share them with you here and on our social media channels.

In the meantime, we are already working towards our next aim – the Centro Yanachaga, helping children find a home in Peru. We’ll be introducing this project in full soon here on the Circus Blog, but for now you can find out more on our charity page, where of course you can also make a donation.
