Gerhard Richter: 100 Works for Berlin

01.04.2023 to 2026
Neue Nationalgalerie

The exhibition shows for the first time the long-term loan from the Gerhard Richter Art Foundation to the Neue Nationalgalerie.

The central work in the exhibition is the series Birkenau (2014), consisting of four large-format, abstract paintings. Birkenau is the result of Richter’s long and in-depth engagement with the Holocaust and the possibilities of representing it. The works are based on four photographs taken in the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, which the artist transposed with charcoal and oil paint to four canvases before gradually painting over them abstractly. With each layer of paint, the depiction of the original drawing disappeared a little more, until it eventually became invisible. The work also includes a large four-part mirror, which is positioned opposite the four Birkenau canvases, creating another level of reflection.

The GENERALI BERLIN HALF MARATHON is one of the biggest half marathon events in the world.

A fast course lined with cheering spectators will once again drive everyone to peak performance on 02 April 2023.
Competitive and recreational runners, wheelchair users, hand cyclists and inline skaters will achieve top times at the start of the season. An exclusive winner’s medal awaits the finishers.
The Berlin Half Marathon is an essential part of the classic running events. It takes participants over a distance of 21.0975 km past the highlights of the city, such as Alexanderplatz, Berlin Cathedral, the State Opera House Unter den Linden and Checkpoint Charlie.

A Jam Session is an after-hour where musicians can blow freely and hang without the constraints of their usual engagements. We want to communicate the excitement of an improvised set on the dance-floor and bring this vibe to the festival to create a moment on stage for unique musical encounters. Now we don’t call this the ALL-STAR JAM BAND for no reason: Meschiya Lake, Ewan Bleach, Mauro Porro, Malte Tönißen and David Hermlin are all headliners in their name. They will meet on stage for the first time, and we will be there to see it! And just like JAM CATS, the stage will be open for more musicians afterward. It’s going to be a splendid and one-of-a-kind evening. ♬

“CUIR” is sometimes gentle, sometimes powerful: a sensitive duet that explores our desire for mutual understanding and exposes the fragility of our personal relationships.

The two artists use harnesses usually worn by draft horses to plough through the soul of man: Arno Ferrera and Gilles Polet do not seek power over the other in the process, but seek connection and defend a gentle vision of humanity that respects our differences and interdependencies.

With unique partner acrobatics, breathtaking aesthetics and touching poetry of manipulation, “CUIR” is a powerful body-to-body confrontation that leaves a lasting impression, carried into the hearts of the audience by a powerful soundtrack.

Between breath-taking partner acrobatics and involuntary slapstick, “Surface” is a calm, beautiful and  playful performance for the whole family.

On a stage filled with water, four acrobats explore, challenge and fail each other, sometimes carefully, sometimes recklessly, wondering: What happens when they are deprived of the solid ground beneath their feet?

Concentrated, yet with mischievous pleasure, the four acrobats slide over the slippery stage. In search of the balance between control and exuberance, they climb and lean on each other,  exploring the limits of the possible in a wonderfully original performance.

Between breathtaking partner acrobatics and unintentional slapstick, “Surface” is a calm, enchanting and playful performance for the whole family that leaves the audience with a big smile and deep satisfaction.

Monki leads us to look in the rearview mirror at the beginning of his teenage years, where the simplest stories turn into extravagant adventures! We are transported into the past of Generation Y, in which video games, 8-bit music, tape players and lava lamps are the emblematic objects of the imagination.

Around and on top of the 2 chinese poles Monki tells with breathtaking acrobatic skill a touching story of the awkwardness and insecurity of his teenage years. With a lot of humour, fun and a portion of human messiness, he manages to pull us into his world and leaves us with a wide smile.

STATIC is a tender, funny and touching show, a heart-warming experience about human connection and fragility, that let’s us celebrate the awkwardness, the fragility and the festiveness of life.

The Humboldt Lab’s inaugural exhibition

What to expect

Global environmental changes not only pose a threat to the very basis of our livelihoods; they also have far-reaching repercussions for the political and social structures of societies. The Humboldt Lab’s inaugural exhibition After Nature deals with the interdependencies of climate change and the loss of biodiversity and with worldwide challenges to democratic principles of order.

DARK MATTER is a parallel cosmos of expansive light installations in which the boundaries between the real and the digital worlds become blurred. Within the pitch-black rooms of a converted factory, the visitor embarks on a journey through seven partly interactive works. Light, movement and sound fuse into emotional choreographies of luminous shapes and colors

Built across 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, DARK MATTER presents a range of multimedia installations.

These vary from breathtakingly intimate light compositions, to interactive walk-in structures, and room-encompassing audiovisual performances. Some works are supported with a worldwide unique 3D-soundsystem. Each room possesses an own individual atmosphere that unfolds upon entry, creating a holistic and one-of-a-kind experience; a space to be enjoyed by visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

The Neue Nationalgalerie
Its Architect and Its Building History

For its reopening the Neue Nationalgalerie is devoting a special exhibition area to the history of its building and the work of its architect, Mies van der Rohe. The two major emphases are on the period of its construction (1965–1968) and its thorough refurbishment by David Chipperfield architects over the past six years (2015–2021). Selected works of art from the Nationalgalerie’s collection relating to the museum’s architecture supplement the documentary exhibit. Along with works by Josef Albers and Isa Genzken, most recent works by Michael Wesely and Veronika Kellndorfer dealing with the renovation are on display.

Caught between her desperate husband, a cheerful best-man, two fumbling butlers and a lustful admirer, our hostess slips away from her wedding reception into a secluded smoking lounge. Hidden amongst the darkly decadent ambiance, past the quarrels and false pretenses, is an elephant in the room that’s taking up more and more space…

Photography, Fine Arts, and Fashion since 1900

Fashion and art are mirrors of social changes and individual needs. In the collection of the Berlinische Galerie, this theme is present in surprising and diverse ways. In addition to numerous fashion photographs spanning the twentieth century, just as many  paintings and drawings testify to the role of fashion as a means of expression and representation of a particular era: from the reform dress around 1900 and the Dada dandies of the 1920s to avant-garde clothing designs in contemporary art.

WITNESSING HISTORY 19.03.2022 – 07.05.2022

The exhibition »Witnessing History« presents a fine selection of 40 iconic photographic works from the history of photo journalism, that have a major historic and art historic importance. Amongst others, works by Thomas Hoepker, Robert Lebeck, Steve Schapiro, Robert Capa, Dorothea Lange, Ernst Haas, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Polidori are on view.

Grimson returns to Berlin with the full band for a headline show at Marie Antoinette! This time with special guests Lover Buffet and Emma Nydén!
“Grimson is the new musical multi-media project from singer/songwriter and animator Aiden Berglund. Berglund got his start writing and performing melancholic indie folk in New York, then moved to Berlin mid-pandemic and began expanding his creative horizons with his new project, Grimson. Berglund’s inspirations as of late instead incorporate expansive art rock arrangements, krautrock rhythms, electronic flourishes, and a stirring melodic core, as seen on his latest singles, ‘How Come No One Told Me’ and ‘Good Dreams.'”

The curators Steven P. Harrington and Jaime Rojo (Brooklyn Street Art) in close cooperation with Martha Cooper, have created a multimedia exhibition in which artistic works and documentary material are juxtaposed.

Visitors will receive an exclusive insight into Martha Cooper’s collection of sketchbooks (so-called “Black Books”) and memorabilia as well as into her extensive photo archive. Numerous objects from her personal collection contextualize her work and its cultural and historical relevance.

Deliciously retro and absolutely original, Cirque Le Roux delves into a smoky monochrome world of circus arts, Hollywood film noir and physical theatre

Welcome to the luxurious estate of Miss Betty. Caught between her desperate husband, a cheerful best-man, two fumbling butlers and a lustful admirer, our hostess slips away from her wedding reception into a secluded smoking lounge. Cigars, whisky, slapstick and remarkable acrobatics culminate into a turbulent amorous intrigue. Hidden amongst the darkly decadent ambiance, past the quarrels and false pretenses, is an elephant in the room that’s taking up more and more space…

Welcome to the roaring twenties! at the Wintergarten Varieté – an iridescent evening blurring the lines of today and yesterday is on the menu. The opulent show production 20 20 – The Twenties Variety Revue harks back to Berlin’s most sinful decade – the golden 1920s – while at the same time diving head first into the new 2020s. Not only the stage, but the ambience of the entire building transfigures, true to form, into the perfect 1920s establishment. Together, the Berlin directors Pierre Caesar and Markus Pabst, as well as the talented composer and entertainer Jack Woodhead, resurrect an epoch in which audiences were as addicted to entertainment as they are again today. Always searching for ever new, frivolous sensations.

What do we see? What does it mean to be watched? How does being observed change the way we behave?

In Circa’s Peepshow, a team of acrobats challenge our preconceived notions of voyeurism, contact and intimacy.

Combining elements of circus, cabaret and burlesque in a beautifully bizarre hall of mirrors Circa’s Peepshow is inviting, but also enticingly eerie. Fascinating, wonderful and unsettling all at once.

Over two acts, Circa’s Peepshow sees the acrobats flirt with the possible. They bend to the extreme, build swaying towers of balanced bodies and display intricate aerials. Lightly, powerfully and playfully.

Award-winning contemporary circus ensemble Circa take us on a stirring journey of what it means to be human and of how our bodies, our connections and our aspirations all form part of who we are

Ten acrobats question what it means to be human, displaying the radical physicality that is Circa’s trademark. How much can we carry? And who can we trust to support our load?

Complex choreographies appear light and playful. The laws of gravity don’t seem to apply as the acrobats leap into the air, fall with a smile, twist into one another and build intricate sculptures with their bodies.

Festival for Music, Motorcycles & New Heritage

Here’s what they have to say:

“The Pure&Crafted Festival has always been distinguished by its unique mix. And to be honest, deep in our teenage souls we know what life is all about. It’s about motorbikes, music and cool stuff. But getting these three together is not always easy. That’s what Pure&Crafted is for.

Back in 2015 when it began, there was a new feeling in the air, old values were being rediscovered: good honest craftsmanship, handmade and analogue. Motorcycles with carburettors, guitar music, jeans made from selvedge denim. Custom bikes, guitar music and new-heritage rolled into one. The ultimate cocktail for the new summer of love.”
