Every year in September the eyes of the art world are on our hometown for the five days of Berlin Art Week. Between the 9th and 13th September, more than 100 locations in the city will present a diverse programme of exhibitions, performances, screenings and more. You’ll find Berlin Art Week not only in museums and galleries, but theatres and project spaces, pop-up venues and even in the open air.
It would be impossible to showcase everything that is taking place across the city, so we’ve picked some highlights of the Berlin Art Week in locations close to the Circus.
The show begins on Wednesday, with events at the main art institutions across the city. Thursday sees the opening of the Positions Berlin Art Fair at the former Tempelhof Airport, with galleries from Germany and around the world presenting a mix of new up-and-coming artists as well as some more established names. Thursday is also Gallery Night, with special exhibitions and events taking place into the evening.
As the weekend approaches, Featured Night on Friday showcases the best of Berlin’s independent art scene and a chance to see what is being created in the city beyond the main institutions and galleries. Saturday is probably the most popular day during Berlin Art Week, with open houses taking place at private collections, gallery visits and studio tours. This continues on Sunday in all kinds of spaces, including the programme at the Berlin Art Week Garden.
It would be impossible for us to include everything that is going on, but the Berlin Art Week website has a full progamme including a searchable map to help you find the most interesting exhibitions, tours and events.
Close to the main station, the Hamburger Bahnhof no longer welcomes trains but is instead Berlin’s leading contemporary art museum and well worth a visit at all times of the year. As well as their current exhibitions, during Berlin Art Week the Hamburger Bahnhof is the venue for a series of concerts, performances and conversations. Highlights include the launch of an exhibition on the pioneer of electronic and experimental music Ryuichi Sakamoto. And if you miss Berlin Art Week this year, never fear: the Sakamoto exhibition is running until May 2027.

Getting there from The Circus (Rosenthaler Platz): Tram M8 to Invalidenpark (approx 20 mins).
A short walk from Rosenthaler Platz, in the heart of the gallery district that developed in the 1990s along Auguststraße, the KW Institute for Contemporary Art presents the Kyiv Biennial, “a nomadic, international project that interweaves artistic, political and social issues” through a mix of contemporary art, sound and exchange by 40 intergenerational voices from Berlin and beyond. The Kyiv Biennial will close with a performance from Berlin-based artistic duo Labour. It will take place on the Saturday from 8pm until midnight and is intended as a drop-in events… join at any time, stay as long as you like and leave at any point.

Getting there from The Circus (Rosenthaler Platz): The KW Institute is a short walk from Rosenthaler Platz (approx 10 mins).
Our neighbours on Torstraße, Eigen + Art Lab is the project space of Galerie Eigen + Art and has been the venue for exhibitions and artistic interactions since 2015. During Berlin Art Week the Lab is the venue for a solo exhibition from the artist Lili Theilen, which will open as part of the Gallery Night on Thursday 10 September. Visitors can join the artist for a free tour of the exhibition on the Saturday (first come, first served).
