Five Favourite
There are certain things that have become a tradition on a Sunday in Berlin. Many Berliners like to linger over their late breakfast at one of the city’s brunch buffets. Another favourite Sunday tradition is the flea market. You’ll find them all over the city, with stalls selling vintage clothing and books, antique furniture and second hand bicycles, arts and crafts, street food, and all manner of things that are junk to some and treasures to others. Here we’ve picked five of our favourites, all in easy reach of The Circus.
Flohmarkt am Mauerpark
Probably the most famous flea market in Berlin is located in Prenzlauer Berg close to where the Berlin Wall once stood. It attracts plenty of local artists and craftspeople who come to Mauerpark to sell their creations, including jewellery and sustainable fashion. The food trucks will keep you fed and watered, and just across the park you can join the party for the legendary Bearpit Karaoke sessions (Every Sunday).
Arkonaplatz
The closest flea market to The Circus, Arkonaplatz is a short walk up the hill. This small but popular flea market is especially well known for its vintage furniture and other things to brighten up your home. History buffs will also love the book stalls and the stands selling old photographs, maps and postcards. The square itself has a number of nice cafes and bars, and it can easily be combined with a trip up the street to Mauerpark (Every Sunday).
Boxhagener Platz
You’ll find this flea market in the vibrant neighbourhood of Friedrichshain, where locals and visitors come every Sunday in search of retro furniture and second hand clothes. There’s usually some street musicians keeping the crowds entertained, and you’ll find all kinds of hip cafes and restaurants on the square and in the neighbourhood around. On Saturdays, the same location hosts a popular farmers’ market (Every Sunday).
DER Original Berliner Trödelmarkt
This is a classic Berlin flea market that many visitors to the city stumble across as it is located right in the city centre on Museum Island. It’s probably best known for its antique book stalls, but it is also a great place to search out decorative items, handmade clothing and work by local artists and designers. You can walk there from The Circus in about fifteen minutes, and you can combine it with some Sunday sightseeing as you’re close to many of the city’s major landmarks (Every Saturday & Sunday)
Nowkoelln Flowmarkt
A trip down to the Maybachufer alongside the canal in Neukölln is always worth it. This is a fun neighbourhood with plenty of great bars and restaurants, cool independent shops and galleries, and once a month the Nowkoelln Flowmarkt. This flea market is a mix of artists selling their works, locals selling their clothes, and the rest of the neighbourhood enjoying a stroll by the canal. If you’re not here for the Sunday the market happens, the famous Turkish food market takes place at the same location every Tuesday and Friday and is well worth a trip south on the U-Bahn from The Circus (Every second Sunday of the month).
